Brother HL-2170W: High-Quality, Cheap Wireless Laser Printer
Laser printers have traditionally been pricey. I remember the days when you couldn’t find anything under $500.
Now with advances in technology and decreases in production and assembly costs, those days are long gone. The Brother HL-2170W is a fast, dependable wireless laser printer that can be purchased for less than $150. When taking into consideration the build quality, performance and reliability factors, you cannot go wrong at all.
Keep in mind that this is a monochrome laser printer that we’re talking about. You won’t find something that prints color in this price range as of yet. The maximum print resolution is 2400 x 600 dpi. It holds 250 sheets in its tray which loads from the bottom of the unit. Supported paper sizes include letter, legal, executive, A4, A5, A6, B5 and B6, along with envelopes. It takes only 10 seconds for the Brother HL-2170W to warm up for printing the first page. There’s 32MB of onboard memory to help pages move along. The printer is pretty compact at only 14.5″ W x 14.2″ D x 6.7″ H.
The Brother HL-2170W has a top lightning-fast print speed of 23 pages per minute. CNET.com in its tests did not note lags in performance. “We printed more than 150 sheets of paper during our lab testing and never experienced a paper jam or even the slightest delay, their review read.
Supported wireless standards include 802.11b and g. Wireless setup is generally easy with the included software. It also supports 10/100 Base-TX fast Ethernet and connectivity to a computer is a snap with a USB 2.0 cable. The HL-2170W is compatible with PC, Mac and Linux systems.
But don’t expect any bells and whistles on this printer. It is a no-frills machine without an LCD screen to display error messages or print progress. It’s not the best looking printer out there either, but it gets the job done and will not let you down.
The price of the Brother HL-2170W is currently averaging $100. For a strong performing wireless laser printer of this caliber, that’s a hell of a deal.
