Samsung SCX 4500W: Stylish, Affordable Wireless Laser PrinterIf you’re looking for a stylish wireless laser printer that is stunning in appearance, check out the Samsung SCX-4500W. It is arguably the most gorgeous multifunction printer (MFP) on the market today.

The SCX-4500W multifunction laser printer is all black, with both glossy and matte finishes. Because it is so attractive looking it’s not something that you need to hide away like other laser printers which tend to be taupe and unappealing. The dimensions are compact at 13.0″ W x 15.5″ D x 6.5″ H, so it can be considered a small printer.

The paper tray, which holds 100 sheets, pop out with a press of a button. Monochrome print resolution is 600 x 600 dpi, and being a printer meant for the home office it offers no color printing capabilities. Common paper sizes like A4, A5, A6, Letter and Executive are all supported. The included cartridge can print 1,000 sheets, while replacement ones can print twice as much. But cartridges aren’t cheap at $70.

Print speeds of the Samsung SCX-4500W are rather impressive at 17 pages per minute, and warm up time is only 15 seconds. A four-page PDF, according to Macworld, takes about 31 seconds to print. The magazine gave it an above-average rating, noting that other printers in its class performed slightly better.

When it comes to image quality, the SCX-4500 doesn’t disappoint. The SCX-4500 earned a Good rating (on a scale of Superior, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor) from our panel of experts in our Text Quality test; overall, text appeared clean and smooth, but not as sharp as the output from other laser printers we’ve tested. Print quality lost integrity at finer point sizes. On our Graphics, Fine Lines, and Gradients test, the SCX-4500 earned a Good rating: fine lines were clean and well preserved, gradients looked flushed and weren’t well-distinguished, and graphics looked professional though a bit dotty.

The scanning abilities of the SCX-4500W are also impressive. The 24-bit wireless scanner has a top resolution of 4800 x 4800 dpi for color images, and the included software is great for hue adjustments. But unfortunately, it can’t print in color, so you would have to use a separate inkjet printer for photos.

Wireless standards supported include 802.11b and g. The printer can be connected to a local area network via an Ethernet port, and of course you can connect it directly to your computer with a USB 2.0 cable. It is both Mac and PC compatible.

MFPs have become the consumer choice since you essentially get three devices in one for a low price. If you’re just making black and white prints and want a multifunction laser printer priced less than $300 that can copy and scan fairly well with good looks to boot, I doubt very much that you’ll be disappointed with the Samsung SCX-4500W.
